Fishing with Fred at Port Ed Cannery, BC
Oil on canvas (24w36h) unframed
I went halibut fishing with Fred Starr in the spring of 2018. He was my dear friend and later became my husband. Fred Starr was a legendary Gitxsan commercial fisherman and he expressed it was ridiculous that I was afraid we would sink the boat if we brought in all of the salmon in with the halibut on the bottom of the boat. Fred also didnt like that I painted the boat so small. He said "Hey Slow Go (the boat) wasnt that small ." I agreed with Fred that his boat was much bigger but when I had the big halibut the size of me in the boat somehow the boat felt smaller, so therefore because it felt small I had to paint it by how I felt not the actual size. I had been working on it for a couple of years and finished it after Freds death. Freds wealth lay in the richness of his lived life as he was part of the forests of Northern BC and part of the water in Port Ed. Fred was very loved and missed after his death. We didnt have big bank accounts together but we had big love. When I sell this image there is a memorial fund I am setting up for Fred Morrison Starr, even in death I want to share the profits of this painting with Fred. Fred loved sports and he especially loved The All Native Basketball tournament in Prince Rupert BC every year. I havent made all the arrangments but I will because I want Fred Morrison Starr to be gone but never forgotten.
