Journey To Healing and Prosperity
This is a wealth story given to me by Atlin BC Tlingit Elder Sylvester Jack. In accordance to the wealth story of Skookum Jim of Carcross Yukon, Sylvester believed that a greater wealth was yet to come and that wealth we decided must be mine. He instructed me to capture an owl and release it publicly with a necklance wrapped around its neck. I captured one owl and the government of Yukon released it. I felted this image we released the story in felting and actually reenacted the legend years later after Sylvester passed away at Takinini Hotsprings up high off a hill top. It was a fantastic day for me when I released the owl, it was met with mockery by the Yukon government and they felt I stole their thunder on the day of the owl release. I am still waiting to cash in and be the richest woman in my village. I consider myself the richest woman in my village because I have lived a very interesting life. I am enjoyed deeply cultivated friendships with Yukon First Nations and Northern BC First Nations most of my life. I have travelled the Yukon and Northern BC on horseback, on foot, on dogsled team and by canoe. I have lived a life of nature and freedom that most of the world dreams about. I have also travelled down a very difficult life path because of my loyalty and choices. This felting represents a wealth story from long ago times brought to life over trying to protect salmon stocks and the Atlin Lake from gold miners and exploitation from minieral exploration. I grew up in the era of the Yukon gold rush. My parents both owned gold claims in Dawson City Yukon. I am part of the long ago Yukon . I have known five generations of Yukon elders and their decendants, My traditional roots are with the Inuit and Mikmaq of Labrador this is a felt of our cultures coming together, and honouring our trust in oral tradition and the importance it places in our lives and will continue to long after our life stories are over.
